As you may know there were significant community concerns when bus-lanes were added to Links Avenue. The bus-lanes were added regardless. Since then safety concerns have been raised by the community, especially in regard to incidents between school children and buses. An independent safety review commissioned by Tauranga City Council and WBOP Regional Council recommended that the bus-lanes be removed from Links Ave. In discussions with residents the overwhelming feedback was to remove the bus-lanes from the street.
Tauranga City Council has instead announced it will trial blocking Links Ave to residents and drivers at Ascot Avenue, and will increase the number of buses. This ’trial’ cul-de-sac is being pushed through becoming active November 15.
There was no consultation with residents for this proposed closure
There has been no public advice or consultation of the proposed road closure
The Council and Regional Council continue to ignore the real safety issue of the bus-lanes on Links Ave
The blockage will increase congestion, travel times, and pollution, and will likely bring Ocean Beach Road to a standstill.
This ‘trial’ closure must be delayed until the Council has properly consulted with residents over their issues and needs. The trial must be delayed until the real safety issues have been discussed.
